This post has some spoilers to The Ring.
A couple years ago, Dustin pointed out to me this: While the girl was in the well, the mother pushed the round stone over it to cover and trap the girl. But if the girl saw a ring-like shape because of the light seeping through the cracks, that means that light was coming in from all sides of that cylindrical object. Wouldn't that mean that the stone slab was too small to cover the well, and in result would have just fallen through and crushed the girl?
I'm inclined to agree with Dustin. Heh. However, who cares about the physics of it all? The movie is made to scare people, not entirely fit with the law of physics.

It's true. If the physics were right that movie would have been much more powerful to me. When I saw that, it lost pretty much all of it's credubility. Oh well.
Oh, and Katie is still the highest Nerd one could ever hope to attain.

I do not see nerd as a derogitory term. There are many different types of nerds, and without nerds there is much that would not happen in the world. Katie is the best type of Nerd. One that cares more about Goodness, Truth and Beauty then superficial social concerns and status. I couldn't think of any better person to know.
Too bad you don't understand the word because you can't change the meaning of the word by a sheer act of will. The meaning you indicate isn't the meaning generally held.
I really don't think that someone who's truly pursuing God can be termed a nerd. Why? Because a nerd is someone who has disproportionate loves for something that most of society does not love. However, as the chief end of man is to love God, then it is evident that it is the natural state of man to so love Him. Thus, even if what you assert of Katie is true, she is merely being a human, and rationally acting on her natural love, which is shared by all men in some way. Therefore she is not acting on a disproportionate love, as there can be no such love. Nor is she acting on a love that society has no common ground with, because all men relate to God as their final end, thus reflexively loving Good where they see it.
I think this is borne out by observation. I've never heard anyone call an intensely Godly person a nerd. Prudish, fanatical, etc, but the general human mind makes no connection between Godliness and nerdiness. This native cognitive movement indicates the principle I've above shown.
So your post doesn't really seem to establish either of the two things it intended to accomplish, does it? It doesn't establish that Katie is a nerd, or that being a nerd is good.

If there is anyone in this world who should understand the meaning of this word, I should be it. I have been called a nerd and around nerds long enough to understand every nuance of how it is used.
You claim a nerd is one who has a disproportionate love for something that most of society does not love. This is a poor definition. It is not necessarily a disproportionate love. It is a very strong love perhaps, but not Necessarily disproportionate. Many nerds love things properly for their place and position. They are called a nerd because most of the world cannot understand why they love such as they do. So, with this more appropriate definition, a Good Philosopher is absolutely a nerd. Your main claim is that everyone has this love for GT and B. It is clear that all men are created with a desire to seek God and the good, but this does not mean that men love these things. "men love the darkness"... By actively pursuing the truth beyond what our society can generally understand, by being interested in things beyond the mundane and common desires of this world, the Good Philosopher has by far a "very strong love for something that most of society does not love". An innate attraction towards something ain't good enough for a societal love. ;-)
And yes, I have heard people call very Godly, and very Philosophical, persons nerds. Hence, in my vast experience of the common word useage, I have support for my definition.
Therefore, Katie is a nerd. All you have to do is hang around her for a little while to realize how much she loves Goodness, Truth and Beauty. And, depending on the object of the nerdship, it can certainly be good.
